Pre-treatment instructions for optimal results

1 to 2 Weeks Before

  • Review medications: If approved by your personal physician, stop taking blood-thinning drugs and supplements like aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, and vitamin E to lower bruising risks. Never stop prescription medications without asking your doctor first.
  • Plan your schedule: Schedule your treatment at least 2 to 4 weeks before any big event to allow time for swelling or bruising to heal.
  • Prevent cold sores: Tell your practitioner if you get cold sores; they may give you preventative medicine.

3 to 5 Days Before

  • Pause active skincare: Stop using retinoids, retinol, glycolic acid, salicylic acid (BHAs), and alphahydroxy acids (AHAs). These products increase skin sensitivity and can cause irritation when combined with skin treatments or injections.
  • Avoid hair removal: Stop waxing, plucking, tweezing, or using hair removal creams on the treatment area.

24 to 48 Hours Before

  • Skip alcohol: Do not drink alcohol for 24 to 48 hours before your visit because it thins the blood and increases bruising.
  • Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water to help your skin recover quickly.
  • Reschedule if sick: Call your clinic to move your appointment if you have a rash, active cold sore, or infection near the treatment site.

The Day of Treatment

  • Eat and drink: Have a light meal or snack before you go so you do not feel dizzy or lightheaded.
  • Clean your face: Arrive with a clean face that is free of heavy makeup.
  • Bring your notes: Write down your questions ahead of time so you remember to ask your provider.

Post-treatment care for lasting beauty

After receiving a medical injectable, the most important steps are to keep the area clean, avoid touching it, and skip intense heat or exercise for at least 24 to 48 hours to minimize swelling and bruising.

The First 4 to 6 Hours

  • Stay upright: Keep your head elevated and avoid lying completely flat to ensure the injectable settles correctly (especially important for neuromodulators like Botox).
  • Do not touch: Avoid touching, rubbing, massaging, or applying pressure to the treated area to prevent the product from moving.
  • Keep skin bare: Leave the skin clean and avoid applying makeup or skincare products immediately.

The First 24 to 48 Hours

  • Avoid intense heat: Stay away from saunas, hot tubs, steam rooms, and direct sun exposure, as heat can worsen swelling.
  • Skip strenuous exercise: Pause heavy workouts, gym sessions, and intense cardio, as increased heart rate and blood flow can increase bruising.
  • Sleep on your back: Prop your head up with an extra pillow and try to sleep on your back to avoid putting pressure on your face.
  • Manage swelling: Apply a cold compress or ice pack wrapped in a clean cloth for 10 minutes at a time if you experience swelling.
  • Skip alcohol and blood thinners: Continue to avoid alcohol and over-the-counter blood-thinning supplements for another day or two.

3 to 7 Days After

  • Hold active skincare: Do not restart retinoids, retinol, AHAs, BHAs, or harsh scrubs until any redness, swelling, or needle marks have completely healed (usually 3 to 5 days).
  • Postpone facial treatments: Wait at least 2 weeks before getting facials, chemical peels, microneedling, or facial massages.
  • Be patient with results: Swelling and bruising are completely normal. Neuromodulators take 7 to 14 days to fully work, while dermal fillers can take 2 to 4 weeks to fully integrate and soften.

🚨 When to Call Dr Sarah Immediately

  • Severe or worsening pain at the injection site
  • Blanching (skin turning white, pale, or mottled) or a dusky blue/purple color near the area
  • Skin that feels unusually hot to the touch or shows signs of infection (like pus)
  • Visual disturbances or changes in your eyesight

You can use arnica to help prevent and speed up the healing of bruising caused by medical injectables. It is available as a topical cream or gel, as well as oral tablets.

Before Treatment (Optional Prevention)

  • Start oral tablets: You can consider taking oral Arnica montana preparations prior to an appointment, following the package directions or professional guidance.

After Treatment (Healing)

    • Apply topical gel: Gently apply arnica gel or cream to the affected areas as needed. Do not rub or massage the skin firmly, as this can affect the treatment area; instead, lightly pat it onto the skin.
    • Continue oral preparations: Keep taking oral arnica after your treatment until the bruising begins to fade.
